Default Don't be the Rabbit: Not Giving a Free Ride to Others

Sooner or later, if you drive with a radar detector, you will encounter this experience.

Having driven safely with radar detectors for nearly 30 years. I have had many experiences similar to this, especially in the days when the Valentine One was the king of the dash-mounts.

As I have matured over this time, I now choose not to let any one who doesn't have the courage themselves to drive out front with or without a radar detector and I slow down and get into the right lane, letting them pass me, if they feel compelled to do so.

I reverse the situation and put them out front, to school them on what it feels like to be the rabbit (which most don't like being). Sooner or later they finally get the message and back off, letting you to safely continue on your journey.

I hope this video demonstrates how to behave responsibly if and when such an event happens to you.

Resist the impulse to be "pushed" and slow down until such time they give up and let you go on your way.

Sometimes, I decide to exit and stop to refresh myself or get fuel just to put some distance between us.

Drive responsibly with your radar detector and set a example for others to observe (and hopefully learn) good safe driving behaviors.

One of my big pet-peeves as well.

If you want to be in a wolf-pack or have a wingman, you've gotta be willing to take turns.

As long as the other driver demonstrates that he/she can be safe of their speed, alert-level/situational-awareness, following distance, signaling intent, etc., I'm more than willing to travel with them, and take my turn on-point (or trailing-six, if in a wolf-pack).

But they've gotta be willing to do it, too.

In all my years of really road-tripping, there's probably been less than a dozen times (exclusive of "club cruises" and the like, when you're among like-minded enthusiasts/hobbyists), where that kind of natural bond cemented between two or more "strangers."

I still remember those unique cases fondly, and if I close my eyes, I can actually remember each car, each driver, as we eventually peeled-off on our separate ways or due to separate needs, with a wave, a nod, or another indication of our mutual respect and trust.

Agreed, I especially enjoy the special-bond that occurs with two-wheelers.

Many years ago I was traveling into Québec City, Québec with my wife (who I was dating at the time) and had such an experience with a cyclist.

It remains one of the most memorial and fun experiences of my life-time.

Yes, you are right, it is nice to run with guys that have the character to share/spread the risk, as it were.

It's cheesewizzes like the above that are the danger, if you let yourself fall into the(ir) trap. They often tailgate (to push) far too close for the speeds.

It is my understanding that one should leave about 1 car length for every 10mph. I have had knuckleheads get so close at high-speed (and I am not talking about a little friendly drafting) I am talking recklessly close that I have decided that it's best in the long-run to slow-down, get in the right lane, or in sometimes exit to allow them time to run-alone away (from you).

I've been driving with radar detectors far a very very long-time, and I have gotten that wisdom as I have aged and matured (from the mistakes that I have made along the way).

PS: I've got literally a ton of unpublished video over a lot of years of Speed Trap Hunting, that I hope as I bring them online, will further help our collective small community of driving enthusiasts in positive ways.

+1.

That's my rule-of-thumb as well - to maintain distance (my understanding is also that it should be 1 car length for every 10 MPH, and that, furthermore, it is so only under "optimal/clear" conditions) that's not just a courtesy to the driver in front, but to make sure that both of us are safe, too. I've run into packs which got too aggressive, and I have removed myself from such. I've also participated in packs - again spontaneous meetings of common minds - which are so organized that when a newcomer joins and becomes too aggressive, the pack simply "rejects" said individual. Indeed, following too-closely is a big danger to all.

In the end, it comes back to the "one minute lost, one hour gained" rule - it's often best to just disengage.
