Default Speed Camera - Inside Police Vehicle?

Earlier this morning on the way to work I was driving on the highway and noticed a police car on the opposite side of the highway parked next to the center median/barrier. He wasn't anywhere near a place he could make a U-turn to come to the other side to stop someone for speeding, so I wonder what he was doing? There was a person in the drivers seat of the vehicle, so I know it wasn't one of those "dummy" vehicles I sometimes see around. Does anyone know if they use speed camera's in this manner? (usually they are stationed in an unoccupied vehicle on the side of the road)

I'm not up to date with police technology (which is why I'm asking here), but my understanding is that normally police will use a radar/laser gun to get your speed then pull you over. Is it possible that a live person in the vehicle can take a picture and get your speed and mail you a ticket? Again, I know they do this with the speed cameras they set up on the highway but those are generally unmanned.

Thanks in advance.

Default monitoring

Protech,

I'am not exactly sure but that could have been a officer shooting laser through his windshield and calling down the road to another officer a description of the vehicle speeding. Then again they could have been sitting there to just slow people down. I see that alot. If your radar detector/laser jammer doesn't go off then its just them monitoring.

It depends where abouts in the country you are (and even what country).

These mobile camera vans are never "unmanned." They always have someone inside to set up, monitor and shut down the equipment.

The type of equipment they use depends on where you are. In the US, most use low power radar units (usually K Band) eg IL, AZ, LA, DC, MD & OR. Some use standard Laser guns e.g. MD & TN. Others use a device called PoliScanSpeed (a type of scanning laser) e.g. OH. In PA you have to look out for ENRADD (a light barrier system set up across the road and monitored remotely from police units.)

In some other parts of the world they'll even park up and hook into sensors buried in the pavement so it's completely undetectable. (called DS2)

Where was this trap? What part(s) of the country do you drive in? That'll help us establish what you're up against.

Thank you for the replies!

I am from Illinois and I was on I-294. My radar detector picked it up as a K-band radar (I have a Escort Solo S2). After reading what steagall1000 said, I believe this was the case. I did see another police officer not too far down the highway on my side of highway, but he had someone pulled over already. Maybe that first police officer was calling down the road a description of the vehicle that was speeding.

SpeedCheetahAl: Thanks for clarifying about the mobile camera vans, I wasn't aware someone was inside of them. Also thanks for the information on the different types of equipment.

On the part of the highway I was on, the highway slopes down a little then slopes back up, and on the way up the slope you cant see far ahead of you. As soon as it levels out its a long straight away and you can clearly see down the highway, and thats when the radar detector went off and I could see him off in the distance on the other side of the highway. I wasn't in a construction zone or anything, but after seeing the signs on the highway saying that its monitored by speed camera (usually only found in the construction areas) I was wondering if the police officers could sit with a radar and speed camera and just send you a ticket via the mail. Again, after reading what steagall1000 said, it seems that it may have been a police officer telling another officer down the road of a speeder.
