Wow, that is a good experience, I do almost all of my own vehicle work and have a multimeter, I never would of thought to use a radar detector capable of reading volts of the system. I always grab my multimeter without question, but in your case you did not have a multimeter and it worked great, comes to prove that radar detectors with functionality like voltage display can come in handy

When I was testing my 9960G for review the battery voltage feature on it actually saved me from being stuck with a dead battery one day. I tested the battery when the Cobra was reading 11.7 volts on average and immediately found a bad cell.
