Default LEO Tactics For Catching Speeders?

Dear all,

Being a newbie still and just getting to know what band on my 9500ix means what, I wanted to ask a few questions on smokies tactics with radar.

For instance, i was heading along a two lane turnpike last week (two lanes in each direction) and there was a trooper sat facing my direction of travel in the center reservation. I had no warning of radar being used neither before or after passing him. He could only travel in my direction as there was a wire fence barrier separating the highway, my question is; was he doing speed enforcement with laser or radar? I'm thinking not laser as his windows were up and i saw no gun. But if it was radar then I would normally have picked him up, I guess its possible he was either using instant on, but it was quite busy and there were some reasonably fast cars coming by me so i'm surprised he wasn't using it. Its possible he was taking a break i suppose or in fact there for an entirely different reason. What i'm also unsure of is if they can detect speed from the rear with radar, do they have have rear radar sensors for cars approaching from behind them?
I apologize if this seems an obvious inquiry but i'm new to this. If there is another thread with this kind of info in it would be great if someone could point me towards it, as I've yet to find much info on this subject yet.

Many thanks

Yes. Several other possibilities are that there was a LEO further down the road that you didn't see, and the one you did see was only used to catch and ticket the cars, or, they were using a plane above (VASCAR) and he was ticketing those people.

It's possible that the officer was simply stationery and observing traffic flow. This can often happen, I believe, during times of rush-hour and heavier traffic flows.

Just because an officer is in the median, doesn't mean he or she is actively running radar or laser or any other speed measurement.

I believe they can be just be sitting in a strategic position observing traffic and being on stand-by if a traffic problem (ie; MVA) occurred.

Also, it is possible that the officer was filling out forms or some other non-enforcement related activity.

To be clear not every police cruiser even has radar or laser speed measuring devices.

Yes traffic enforcement can use radar on vehicles traveling away (from the rear). But generally I have found that technique is either run during cruising (of vehicles ahead of them) or in an ambush situation from an overpass (flyover) type scenario.

Running radar at the rear of departing vehicles from plain site in the medial strip, I don't think makes much sense.

Good points, SE.

He also could have been a chaser.
