Advice on how to protect my newest toy
While I am sure that my questions are not new - I will take advantage of my newbie status and ask anyway.
After years with my reliable but not exactly exciting 2001 MDX (120K miles and still going strong) - and not even one ticket (my RX65 Pro did save my butt a few times) - I finally sprung for a silver 2003 Carrera 4 (yep my midlife crisis - but so what) for some fun on weekends in the Texas Hillcountry.
It came with an SR-7 that has been acting up (constant self-calibration) and I was told by the local Austin Escort Installer that the Radar Receiver needs replacement. Which it seems means for a 911 that the entire front bumper has to come off (big $ right there).
Well, seems to be the occasion to add a laser jammer right there. I am trying to keep the interior clean - so I would prefer an integrated solution meaning a ZR3 or ZR4.
So here are my questions:
1. Is it worth it to fix the SR7 (the new radar sensor is already >$200)
2. Are the ZR going to do the job (seems that some people recommend the LI or Blender - but could these integrate with my SR7 ?)
3. The ZR3 are on sale right now ($249 from Escort) - is the ZR4 worth the extra $200 for use in Texas ?
4. The 911 being rather pointy but silver colored car - should I consider using Veil G4 on the headlights or consider a Laser Shield (yes I do have a personalized front plate) ? And yes looks matters to me.
Would appreciate your thought as I am a little overwhelmed right now by the sheer breath of options.

Regardless of the jammer chosen, I'd definitely consider VEIL and LaserShield for specific point-defense.
And on that front, since the looks of the vehicle is top-priority, consider contracting a professional body-shop to do the VEIL'ing. Search for the membername djrams80 on RadarDetector.net, and cross that with the search term "professional," you should come back with a hit on his "VEIL professionally applied" thread, in which he shows pictures of his Mustang's lights, which were prepared by his favorite body-shop, using their HVLP paint-gun.
This should not cost you much, particularly if your bumper skin is coming off, anyway, for the detector/jammer install.
Overall, if you were sticking with the SR-series RADAR antenna, I'd just go ahead and figure this on a money-saving basis, and get the ZR3.
If you're going to opt to replace the entire unit, then it's a no brainer, just get the ZR4, which is packaged with the 9500ci.
Ultimately, you'll need to ask yourself what's more worth it to you - the seamless integration of the ZR3/4 to your current Escort system or updating your SR-series to the 9500ci, or, alternatively, switching to a different detector system altogether, and seek perhaps better protection, but without the same level of integration.
If you are going to stick with LED-based jammers, a Blinder 3- or 4-head unit will likely provide more jamming performance, as compared to the two heads of the ZR3/4 - but definitely, it will be more work to co-locate the systems' alert displays, and there will not be the same level of integration.
Ok - I have just ordered a can of Veil and 2 LaserShield plates. Albeit I am not sure whether I should shield the rear plate - wouldn't that be asking for trouble with the "authorities" ? Specifically when using a layer of G4 on the plate covers ?
And should I veil the side mirrors ? Not sure how that would look like.
Meanwhile, I think that I will go the route of an integrated system, i.e. get a new radar sensor for my SR7 and add the ZR3.

Alternatively, the 9500ci (and Bel's STi-R) currently provide the best overall radar performance compared to any other brand or model of radar detector available on the market today. More importantly, these two models are completely undetectable by the Spectre radar detector detectors which Texas DPS is rapidly becoming very fond of using in order to specifically target motorists who have radar detectors. I have a 9500ci and I absolutely love it.

If your area allows for tinted plate covers, you may not have too much trouble with VEIL - but keep in mind that the LaserShield itself is not completely transparent, and that may or may not cause your local enforcers to take exception, when the two are combined, particularly in the case of the REAR plate, which is often the one that's most visualized by the enforcers (i.e. even just sitting in traffic), versus the front, which is seen in-passing, and at-speed.
If you want to go the extra mile, and VEIL any mirror-embedded turn-signals, certainly, that would be ideal, but it is not "necessary," per-se, at least from how I see things and my my humble opinion. :)
I would definitely *NOT* VEIL the mirror portion of your external rearview, for safety's sake.
Thanks TSi+ WRX and MEM-TEK. I am really tempted by the 9500Ci but we are talking >$1,500 (and I do want to buy from an official outfit) plus the installation while i can get my SR7 fixed and the ZR3 added for about $500 + somewhat easier installation.
So understood that I could do better but given that I am driving the car only on weekends, will add veil and Lasershield I think that the fix it solution might make more sense to my situation.
Unless of course your feedback is that the SR7+ZR3 integration (+veil + lasershield) defence is not going to give me decent performance at all and I would be wasting the $500 spent on that.
I would put the rear head of the ZR3 up front, over the front plate, to further reinforce the critical center-mass area - to run the setup in "enthusiast form," and, of course, combine it with VEIL G4 and LaserShield to specifically address the lighting elements and the front plate.
I would furthermore contact your local area enthusiasts, to get a true test done on your setup, both for optimization as well as to see if there are unacceptable weak points. Although TX is large, you just may find some either within acceptable driving distance for a weekend road-trip or, alternatively, may be able to meet half-way, somewhere.

Thanks again for the advice. However, one question on the "enthusiast form" setup with the 3 heads ahead (including the rear shifter). I think I read somewhere (Guys of Lidar or Radar Roy - don't remember) a test with participation of the Escort technician that showed that this setup would actually deteriorate overall performance (some frequency interference) rather than improve it. So just wondering whether you had seen these comments and whether there was some hard evidence out there supporting the 3 heads in fron setup ?
^ It wasn't with participation of any Escort representatives.
Rather, this supposition was first made by Radar Roy and others who received an advance-peek/advance-review of the then-new ZR4 - who, in-turn, based their recommendations on the words of their contacts within Escort.
The then-supposition was that the rear head's output was cued slightly differently than that of the front heads', and thus could cause potential destructive interference in a manner similar to "cross-talk."
We in the enthusiast community then repeated this recommendation, citing such sources - until it was proven by our own community members, in direct, first-hand testing versus police LIDAR devices under controlled/quantitative settings, that this assertion was totally unfounded, and that, as with the outgoing ZR3, having all three heads forward actually *helped,* rather than hindered, performance.
Run a search on the ZR4 on the RadarDetector.net Forums, you'll find the proof there.
It was never anyone's assertion that the ZR3 would see any form of such interference/degradation - the data from the past GOL tests pretty much is conclusive in this respect....and the issue only really re-spawned when the ZR4 first came on-scene.
The very first thing you should do is get rid of the front plate.
