Originally I mounted my 9500ci's controller module a bit below the driver's side left air vent, and I had my 9500ci's blue display mounted just above my car's instrument cluster:

Later I converted my 9500ci's blue display to a red display, repositioned it in front of the instrument cluster's clear plastic cover, and installed the remote power/alert LED into the instrument cluster:

Well, this setup was fine and dandy. Yet there were a few things which I didn't like about this setup. First, the control module was readily visible just under the leftmost air conditioner vent to anyone (such as an officer) standing next to my car. I decided to move my 9500ci's control module to a location next to my car stereo. Second, I wanted an even more concealed location for my 9500ci's display without having to hack a slot in my car's instrument cluster. After due consideration, I decided to remove my car's built-in dash clock and install the 9500ci's display behind its orange tinted display cover. Well, the following photos show the results! You can click on the following photos to view a larger version of each photo.

Here are twilight and night photos of the relocated 9500ci control module:

Well, what do you all think? The only issue which I have noticed is that the display dims too soon during approaching twilight. This is due to the orange clock display cover creating additional light blockage for the display's IC photocell. I considered removing the 9500ci display's red (originally blue) display cover to prevent this, but one of my other goals was to make the display even dimmer at night so that basically only I could easily see it.

Personally, I absolutely love the 9500ci controller's sky blue LED color. I really wish that the 9500ci's display module came with a alphanumeric display which had the same sky blue color. Why? The current super deep blue color of the 9500ci's alphanumeric display is a bit intense at night, and it is the exact same color as the blue dash indicator for my high beams. This is the primary reason why I swapped display components with a STi-R owner. I wanted a red display, and he wanted a blue display. Now both of us are happy campers.

It would be neat if Beltronics/Escort offered either red or blue displays for their remote RD products. Even neater would be if they offered an alternative yellow display as well, since a yellow display color would be the easiest for your eyes to quickly focus on at night.

Thanks, Steve.

Speaking of 'bogey at my six...' there's one at my twelve and its initials are: TC (which stand for "Total Control").

Default Why was STi-R discontinued? Flaw or marketing?

Veil's review of the STi-R was so positive I went to buy one online. When I did, I found the unit was discontinued. When I called Bel, they referred me to Escort for the 9500ci.

Do I chance buying a unit that has been discontinued if I can find one? Does Bel still support it?

Yes, it is most unfortunate the Beltronics has discontinued the the STi-R.

While the Passport 9500ci is based on the same underlying hardware platform, programming (ie; firmware) allows for a higher level of performance to be achieved with the STi-R.

I do believe Beltronics will certainly continue to provide support to the product so if you can find one, grab it up, the prices have been very favorable.

Also, it is my belief that Beltronics may be working on a replacement more suited to the US market, but I have no expectation of any particular time-frame for the arrival of such a product.
