I've just logged almost 148,000 on my '99 BMW 540 Sport (Dinan 5) and I am afraid to report that the cost of ownership is skyrocketing lately.
Putting a lot of hard miles on it during this year's Fire Ball Run has likely taken a bit of a toll on my old companion.
Several weeks ago, I experienced the misfortune of having my fan clutch seize on me and in the process have the fan blades disintegrated and created what was essentially a buzz-saw underneath my bonnet.
Stainless-steel braided lines were severed and the hood sustained significant damage as well as other essential mechanicals.
The part that failed cost a mere $144. The damaged to the rest of the vehicle from this failed part totaled almost $4000!
Fortunately I have a high-end insurance company (Encompass) for my Bimmer which doesn't hesitate to pay out legit claims. They covered the damage as a miscellaneous comprehensive claim (even though the damage was caused by mechanical failure). The $144 part was not covered...the rest was.
Now that I got my vehicle back, I will be taking it on a 3000 mile journey.
My Brembo rotors are in need of resurfacing (they got a little hot during the FBR). Other than that, I can only hope that it will hold up.
Three companies I can whole-heartedly recommend for auto insurance are:
They're definitely not the low-price carrier but their claim departments are first rate in my opinion. In otherwords, they are there when you really need 'em.
