Heading to Lowe's today, turning from a North-south road onto the westbound lane of a different road. Immediately (before I was even through the turn), as I was getting ready to punch it and work through traffic, I got a 5-bar 35.5 ka-band hit. Cruise controlled it at the limit, and watched it ramp up. Went up to 7, then down to 2 when I was at the base of a hill, then at the top of the hill -- full strength.
And there was a State Trooper on the opposite side, with a customer pulled over. All total, a 1.3 mile 35.5 hit, though I suspect it would have been much farther had I been on the E-W road to begin with.
Not a save, since the Trooper was busy, but SO nice of him to leave that radar going for me to play against.
And this comes after a nice Ka hit this morning from a local Deputy following me along a different road. Probably 1.5 miles on that one, from behind.
Yeah, 35.5 is a tough egg to crack, but i had another encounter with it tonight, and this time, it was a HUGE save for me.
I was sitting at an intersection, waiting to turn left onto a six-lane road. got about a 2-second blast of 35.5 Ka, about 2-3 bars. A few seconds later, another blast, little stronger. This happened two more times, with the last one being a longer, like ten-second, full-strength 35.5 hit.
I couldn't see a LEO anywhere. Didn't see one behind me, didn't see one coming down the hill across from me. My PLAN was to get through the intersection, slip past traffic, and nail it. But the 35.5 was making me very nervous.
So instead, I cautiously changed lanes once i was through the intersection, then accelerated hard but not unreasonably. No radar hits, and I never broke the PSL, so I thought I was in the clear. Changed lanes once to get out from behind an SUV at the next light, and noticed a car come hauling butt up behind me. Stopped VERY close to my tail, and that's when i noticed the spotlight over the driver's side mirror.
WOOPS!
So I accelerated nice and smooth, letting the Jeep outpace me, then slowly and gradually passed it without ever breaking the PSL. this car stayed behind a moment, then paced the Jeep. THen it changed lanes and blew past me.
State Trooper. Marked, but clean.
Yep, the heat is on. And Betty saved me from cooking that time. WHEW!
Best I can figure is that he was behind me the whole time from that first intersection and I just didn't recognize the Crown Vic headlights. At least Betty knew he was there!
Nice save, I hate it when I look in the RVM and all I see is a State Cop pacing me.
Yep, gave me that little sinking feeling in my gut. Fortunately, I hadn't broken the PSL, and had driven reasonably (i thought), so he moved on to more interesting targets. Wonder if he ran my plates, though....
