I was thinking the STI-R hada rear sensor.

Have a look at the item's installation manual .pdf, which is available on the Beltronics official website.
The only thing I see is a single, combined, forward-facing RADAR/LIDAR receiver antenna.
There is no jammer heads, either front or rear. That's where the ZR4, sourced through their parent firm Escort, comes into play as a stand-alone addition.

Also remember I was told the ZR4's don't work well against Stalker, which I was told my state uses.

Traditionally, the Escort products have not done well against the Stalker LZ-1 LIDAR:
Radar Detector Tests and Reviews by Guys of LIDAR
^ That's of the ZR4.
If you looked in their historical "Tests and Reviews" archives, you can see that, in the many times they've tested the ZR3 over the course of the previous years, the same holds true for that unit.
The Blinder products have, at the same time, historically (currently, J16 performance in a versus scenario is unknown, however, based on J15 performance against such, this should *not* prove to be a worry) provided much better protection against the LZ-1.
If you intend to stick with the ZR4, I would
highly recommend that you pair the jammer with VEIL.
VEIL has always done a number on the Stalker. It practically eats the Stalker alive.

Now that I see the STI-R doesn't have rear pick up it worries me.
My window mount picks up from the rear all the time so I know I need that. |
It's hard (virtually impossible) to say, *definitively,* that you saw actual rear incoming LIDAR, versus scatter/reflections via the unit's forward laser receiver, akin to these single-antenna detectors' ability to pick up rear-incoming RADAR.
The same kind of deal goes for the STi-R.

This is much more complicated than I have time for.
