Default 9500ix Laser Detection

Dear all,

Thought i'd share my first experience of a laser encounter with the 9500ix, only a matter of time until i came across one due to the highish mileage i do.

On the way to Orlando yesterday heading East on I-4, theres a long down hill stretch near the Lakeland exit i think and just tucked under an overpass was a trooper shooting laser. I didn't see him that early, but fortunetly wasn't speeding by much as i saw two SUV's hard on their brakes on the outside lane both of whom were doing 90+ so i backed off. Next thing the detector makes a noise i've never heard before and shouts "Laser", pretty cool! I guess i was about 500 ft from him when it went off, and if i'd have been speeding he would have got me as i can only assume the only reason it went off was because he was shooting directly at me.

Then on the way home trying to miss the I-4 traffic I was on toll road 528 expressway by the airport and in a 55mph zone, just before approaching the toll area and not sticking to 55 i suddenly heard the laser alert again, i immediately stabbed the brakes, and sure enough there on the right under another overpass were at least 5 troopers all lined up like taxi cabs, each one of them with a laser gun resting on their roofs. I was certain they were going to pull me, but glued to my rear view as i went by, nothing. Could i have got my speed down in time before the gun read it? I'm in a black 3 series BMW with no laser defense as yet, just interested?

All in all i was quite impressed by the laser detection, admittedly its probably too late when you get the alert and i was maybe just lucky, but its nice to know when you are targeted i guess.

Thanks

I know the bee line quite well, myself as I used to make that trip often to the Cape and back. Never saw lidar to that extent though.

Good story and I'm glad you didn't get nailed. Perhaps consider starting with Veil G4 and a lasershield as a first step in your laser countermeasure defense arsenal as your 9500ix seems more than up to the task.

My guess they were using Stalker LZ1s.

FHP in Lakeland area is heavy PL3. Every once in a while you will see a LA.

My 9500ix has great lazer detection. I have had it go off at some distance...and close as well...and I have mine mounted above the rear view mirror. Lucky for me I'm not a big time speeder. I have a ZR4 set that I plan to install after a "legal matter" is resolved. I like the way it integrates into the 9500ix and my old Bel RX65 (S7 antenna). But I hope Belscort (CM) comes out with a high power ZR5 soon. One that blows LI away!

Unless I am mistaken you could have been lucky in that you picked up the laser signals as they lazed other cars. The laser scatters everywhere and its our best defense. Just like radar we have to hope they have it trained on someone else or just leave it on. That's what always made my high speed romps in the West a bit risky. The lonely road is the best and safest place to go fast but there is not much likelihood I will get any warning as they radar or lase another car. NM cops (on I-25) were really good about waiting till the last minute to radar. I think they visually sized up your speed and then waited to pop you at the last minute. Farther north in Colorado they like to wait on the far side of an overpass or on-ramp so you don't see them till you pass.
