Red Light Cameras Detected by Radar/Laser Detectors

Al,

Pleased to report that I had a another favorable experience with the GPSMirror and a Radar/Laser Detector.

I happened to be traveling through Maryland and inadvertently stumbled upon a red light camera monitored intersection. My Beltronics Vector 995 alerted to laser as well and I was pleased to hear the alerting of the Cheetah GPSMirror as I approached the intersection after exiting I-97.

I didn't recognize the system as being an ATS one, but the alerting of the of the Vector 995 to laser made me think of the possibility of the "trip" being monitored by lidar instead of conventional induction loops.

Any thoughts?

Brilliant...Indeed it did and you are most certainly on top of your game!

It is interesting to note that radar detectors are capable of alerting to lidar-based red-light camera systems such as these.

I would fully expect a laser detector like the Valentine 1 would also alert, perhaps at even a farther distance than the Bel Vector 995 did which I estimated to be at about 50 feet before the intersection.

I should be returning to the area some time in the near future.

I had been thinking that I had to travel to Arizona to get some red light camera action. It appears Maryland can also provide a target-rich environment, as well.

I was not aware that LaserCraft was actually being deployed on this side of the pond.

Word of caution to the wise, if your radar detector goes off with a laser alert as you approach an intersection, watch out, you might be entering a red light camera monitored intersection.

Perhaps I should make a blog posting about this experience...

Lasercraft are only used in the USA, as far as I am aware. I have not seen them anywhere in Europe.

They are still relatively rare in the USA - they are one of the smallest of the Red light camera vendors with very few contracts compared to the big boys like ATS and Redflex. My guess is they have less than 3% market share and that's being generous.

I'd be wary about making too much of the ability for RD's to save you from RLCs. People will get the wrong idea and assume it will save them from all RLCs. They will then be very annoyed when their local RLCs catch them and their radar detector does not alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

97%+ of RLCs are undetectable without a GPS detector.

Al, Veil guy,

These camera systems are at just about every intersection in georgia. Notice the "3 Pro laser III lens" in the Box. That same system is what sets off my V1 and Blinder M35. Which brings me back to?? Is it being jammed or not?? The cheetah mirror only picks up a few of these according to my friend. Some of these systems are new in different counties. That could be why the Cheetah was not picking it up yesterday. It needs to be entered in the database.
