Yes, the press got it wrong, shocking as that may seem. If they'd had due diligence they'd have revisited the issue when the facts were in. Or maybe even have done some investigating of their own.
But what kind of headline would that have made? "Radar Flap Was A Hoax: Better Plan on Paying Your Ticket" doesn't have nearly as much punch as a headline screaming about tens of thousands of innocent drivers getting hammered by faulty radar units. The Daily News hack never investigated past the loudest mouth, Mr. Shingara. He certainly never bothered to ask Decatur's side of the story and he casually dismissed the State Patrol's protestations as a knee-jerk coverup. Once the story faded from the front page there was no attempt to get the facts straight.
