One other consideration: visibility. At night it's possible to see the V1's directional arrows and bogey counter from 100 yards behind the car. In years past, when driving traffic units I enjoyed easing up behind a V1 driver and hitting him briefly with radar. The display lit up like a Christmas tree and the driver inevitably confirmed that he was using a detector by standing on the brakes.
Since many cops regard detectors as the moral equivalent of burglar's tools, just having one will often spell the difference between a warning and a ticket.
