I chose to, in the day, to reduce visible wire "clutter" primarily and free up the cigarette lighter plug. Also some vehicles cigarette lighter power does not cut-off when the car is parked and shut-off (like BMWs). In this instance, hardwiring would enable you to pull-power off an ignition-based power source.
