It depends where abouts in the country you are (and even what country).

These mobile camera vans are never "unmanned." They always have someone inside to set up, monitor and shut down the equipment.

The type of equipment they use depends on where you are. In the US, most use low power radar units (usually K Band) eg IL, AZ, LA, DC, MD & OR. Some use standard Laser guns e.g. MD & TN. Others use a device called PoliScanSpeed (a type of scanning laser) e.g. OH. In PA you have to look out for ENRADD (a light barrier system set up across the road and monitored remotely from police units.)

In some other parts of the world they'll even park up and hook into sensors buried in the pavement so it's completely undetectable. (called DS2)

Where was this trap? What part(s) of the country do you drive in? That'll help us establish what you're up against.
